To qualify for this tournament, players must play in either the Calgary or Edmonton Chess Challenge


Restrictions: 

- This tournament is open to players Grade 12 and below. 

Only players who have solid knowledge of the chess rules should register. Note: two illegal moves will lead to loss of a game. 

- The maximium capacity for this event is 100 players due to venue capacity constraint.

Start Time: 11AM on April 11, 2026

Parking: 

Schedule: 11:00am – 11:30am Registration/Check-in.

                  11:30am Tournament begins and the finishing time depends on the number of participants. In general, we expect the tournament should finish around 5:00PM.           


Head Tournament Director:  Vlad Rekhson

Format: 12 Sections (Grades 1-12). The exact format of each section will depend on the number of participants but players should expect to play 5 games (players in kindergarten or below should register for grade 1).

Time control: 25 minute and 5 second increment.

Special rules: No agreed draws are allowed before move 25. Players are not allowed to talk to anyone (including parents, coaches, and other participants) except the TD during their games. It is forbidden for players to have cell phones, or other electronic communication, computer, or media devices in the tournament room. 

Prizes in each section (grade)immediately after the completion of the last round

  • 1st place: 1st place trophy, Representation for the Canadian Chess Challenge held May long weekend in Winnipeg
  • 2nd place: 2nd place trophy 
  • 3rd place: 3rd place trophy 
  • Top girl: medal.


Entry fee:  $50


Registration: Registration will be opened once Venue is finalized Register using the “Register” button at the top of the page by 10:00PM on April 9 or the maximum capacity of 100 reached. Late registration and onsite registration will NOT be permitted.  

  1. Byes:
    • Up to 2 half-point byes are allowed for the first 3 rounds (requested in advance by April 10).
    • All other byes are scored as zero points.
    • A last-round bye counts as withdrawing from the event.
    • The byes policy can be at the discretion of the organizer, who has the right to decide and enforce their own rules regarding byes.
  2. Bye Limit: The total number of byes cannot exceed 50% of the event's rounds.

 


NOTE: 

We recommend parents of players 10-year-old and under stay on site to supervise your children Also, please kindly notify the volunteers or TDs in advance if your child leaves before all rounds are completed.
