• Registration ends tonight on our Christmas Rapid Tournament for tomorrow
With the snow falling and the mess it brings, we ask that players and parents bring in indoor footwear for the upcoming tournaments at the Brightminds portable starting with the Christmas Rapid Tournament tomorrow and the December Quad Regular rated tournament on the 15th. There will be shelving to store outdoor footwear.
Kalev Pugi Fund Application
For those who have participated in a major tournament in the last chess cycle (July 1, 2023-Jun 30, 2024), the Chess Federation of Canada has a bursary set up to offset travel costs. Deadline is December 15, 2024, For more info, see the link below:

2025 Canadian Youth Chess Championship
The Canadian Youth Chess Championship will be held in Surrey, BC from July 8 to July 11, 2025. Participants will need to qualify to join. CJCC will hold our qualifier tournament, the Calgary Youth Chess Championship, early in the new year. Players can also qualify through the Alberta Youth Chess Championship as well. Once the dates are set, for players that can’t attend the qualifying tournaments, please let CJCC know, and we can plan for more. More info on CYCC can be found here:

CJCC 2025 Tournament Schedule
CJCC is working on finalizing our 2025 schedule, there are currently dates on our website. Those are tentative. Once CJCC finalizes rental and venues for events, registration will open. Hence why you can see the events but not register for them.

Hello everyone!
I hope everyone has had a great summer break and ready for the upcoming Chess season! We are working on some new and exciting projects this year and are pleased to offer:
• Monthly Rapid tournaments (25min 5s) in sections for beginners, novices, intermediate and open
• Monthly Regular rated tournaments (60min 30s) in sections for novices, intermediate and open
• CJCC’s regular rated and championship tournaments will now qualify for FIDE rating (where applicable)
• Chess in the Library monthly for kids who want to learn more about chess and meet with instructors
CJCC is working on revamping the chess school for beginners. For those looking for a great chess education experience, the following are offered by 3rd parties.
• The Calgary Chess Club has 6 week chess bootcamps run by Bearspaw Junior Chess (more for beginners)
• Bearspaw Junior Chess (hosted by Paul Gagne who has been a mainstay as a Tournament Director for our beginners) has in person classes on Fridays and online classes throughout the week: https://bearspawjuniorchessclub.com/membership
• Chess Minds (hosted by National Master Patrick Tolentino and Angelo Tolentino who has put in many hours of volunteer work) has Friday courses as well as rated tournaments (registration ends August 31st ) : https://www.chessmindscalgary.ca/course-info
• Brightminds chess program (hosted by NM Vlad Rekhson) for those signed up to the Brightminds tutoring program: https://calgarybrightminds.com
CJCC’s events will be updated on the website shortly. For September the following tournaments are:
• Back to School Tournament – Rapid/Quick rated- September 8
• Sept Quad Tournament – Regular/FIDE rated – September 15
• Calgary Junior Regional – Regular/FIDE rated – September 21 &22
To bring offer even more chess products to Calgary, CJCC is working at bringing in additional funding that would require changes to our bylaws to receive AGLC funds. We will be collecting signatures at our first tournament to hold a special meeting October 6th to discuss. More info to follow later.
