2020 Calgary Youth Regional Tie Breaks 


In case two or more players are tied for 1st place the following tie-break procedure will apply: 

  1. Head to head result. This will only apply if all the players in a tied group played each other. 

  2. Tie-break match. If two players tie they will play a two game match with time control of 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment. If more than two players are tied, they will play a single round-robin tournament with the same time controls. If the tie is still not broken the procedure will be repeated using “ARMAGEDDON Rules”; however, if only two players are tied, they will only play one game with the colours determined at random. 

  3. Tie-breaks for all other places will be determined with the following criteria:


Swiss system sections 

  • 1) Head to Head result  

  • 2) Bucholz (total scores of opponents)  

  • 3) Sonnenborn-Berger (total scores of opponents you beat and half of opponents youbeat and half the scores of opponents you drew. the scores of opponents you drew.  4) Cumulative score after each round.  

  • 5) Total wins. 

  • 6)Total games with black


Round-Robin sections 

  • 1) Head to Head result

  • 2) Sonnenborn-Berger (total scores

  • 3) Total wins.

  • 4) Total games with black


Tie Breaks for Top Girls in the combined sections (U8&U10, U12&U14, U16&U18) 

    1. Total points in their own section

    2. If total points are same then tie-break match. If two players tie they will play a two game match with time control of 3 minutes plus 2 seconds increment. If more than two players are 

        tied, they will play a single round-robin tournament with the same time controls.
